7 Signs Your House Needs Rewiring
TL;DR
Old rubber or fabric cabling, no earth, a fuse board with no RCDs, frequent tripping, scorched sockets, and a home that has never been rewired in decades are all signs it is time. When in doubt, get an inspection.
The quick answer
If your home still has its original wiring after several decades, or shows any of the warning signs below, it is worth a periodic inspection. A registered electrician can tell you whether you need a full rewire, a partial one, or just a board upgrade.
The seven signs
- Old rubber, fabric or lead-sheathed cabling. These pre-date modern PVC and degrade with age.
- No earth on sockets or lighting. A real safety risk that a rewire puts right.
- A fuse board with rewireable fuses or no RCDs. Modern boards trip in a fraction of a second to prevent shock and fire.
- Frequent tripping or blown fuses. Often a sign the installation is overloaded or faulty.
- Scorched, discoloured or warm sockets and switches. Switch off and call an electrician promptly.
- Too few sockets, with extension leads everywhere. A sign the wiring never kept up with modern living.
- No rewire in living memory. If nobody knows when it was last done, it is worth checking.
What to do next
None of these on their own always means a full rewire, but together they build a picture. The sensible first step is a periodic inspection, which tests the installation and gives you a clear, prioritised report.
From there you can decide, with honest advice, whether to rewire fully, do it in stages, or simply upgrade the board.

Advice
Questions, answered
Is it dangerous to live with old wiring?
Old wiring is not always an immediate danger, but degraded cabling, no earth and no RCD protection all raise the risk of shock or fire. An inspection tells you where you stand.
Can I rewire just part of the house?
Yes. A partial rewire tackles the worst area, often upstairs, and can be a sensible staged approach. An inspection will tell you if partial is enough.
How much does an inspection cost?
A periodic inspection report for a typical home starts around €150, and it is the best way to know for certain what your wiring needs.
Does a scorched socket mean I need a rewire?
Not necessarily, but it does need urgent attention. Switch it off and call an electrician, as it can point to a loose connection or a fault.
